Swimming with the Bears

There's nothing like taking a dip in a refreshing pool on a hot day – if you know how to swim!

Well, heres the sweet little bear that will make your little ones want to hop in and conquer the butterfly. This identity is for a swim school in Chicago land, teaching kids from 6 months-12 yrs.

Creating this bear was a blast. He needed to appeal to kids and moms alike and be versatile to be used as the main character in graphics, signage and on clothing. This is just the beginning for this bear who changes outfits when it comes to the clubhouse side of the school, and even has a fearless female counterpart, who I'll introduce you to in a later post.

This is how he was originally created, but you can see here how he changed and (peek-a-boo) looks like he lost his shorts! Maybe they are in the deep end :)

Liquid Gold and the Award Goes to…

It's a double whammy day in my design world. Starting off with one of the most delicious designs I've ever done. Kuhlman Estate Olive Oil. Believe me this stuff IS the real deal – I'm talking liquid gold. I was lucky enough to be schooled on the process of olive oil production from Susan Kuhlman, who with her husband owns this family ran business smack dab in the Lucchesi Hills of Italy.

You might recognize the Kuhlman name as belonging to the savvy fashion forward design label. This established identity played an integral role in creating the packaging. The labels were inspired by actual photos of the estate, and incorporated the Kuhlman name by applying the fashion labels to add dimension and texture. I also created a hang tag that give a little more information about the process. These are printed on existing Kuhlman stationary. Keeping everything with a consistent brand feeling.

One of my favorite warm weather activities is biking around the city. I'm so lucky to live in a place that is bike friendly city, just check out this bike map

It was so fun to create these custom jerseys for a local cycle club called the Rough Riders.

The design challenge was to create a quasi-logo and graphics that could be recreated on jerseys, used as a graphic on water bottles and other bike gear. They haven't pick a winning design yet, but you should soon see a pack with these jerseys ruling the city streets!

With the warm weather comes one of my favorite summer outings, the farmers market! The beautiful fruits and veggies, flowers, fresh herbs, and people watching provide confirmation that warmer weather is here! Today's project is an identity and marketing materials for a St. Paul based produce distributer. Here is the creation of a new fresh logo, biz system, and marketing materials for their consumer facing identity called Treehouse Foods. And now I'm hungry…

In a quest for fresh feet, Scented Soles creator Chris Burgy masterminded a fresh scented, moisture absorbing foot pad for those hot summer days. When she contacted me about packaging for these we agreed on fresh, flirty packaging to accompany her fun footie styles. Here's the fab boutique-style packaging for these little slip (and stink) savers!

What's a girl to do when it's playoff time? Easy...escape listening to the one way conversation on the TV and sew! I haven't had as much time as I would like to make all the things on my to do list. But these have made the cut for my "must haves".

The jacket was inspired from a Jean Paul Gaultier in the May Luckymag. Its a pattern from one of my favorite sewing websites. I dont have a pict of the original, but it was a military inspired white denim zip up. Adding the details to the jacket pattern was a pretty easy modification.

The pants were right out of the package. This pattern was easy to fit and sew! I used a white denim and spilled coffee all over them the first time I wore them out. awesome...Thank You Oxy clean. My next project is this fantastic jumper, right out of the 70's....Stay tuned!

Feeling Inspired for a good cause

The Soap Factory in Minneapolis is an non-profit innovative exhibition space, dedicated to contemporary fine art practice. Needless to say there is some pretty cool art that is featured in this space. I was recently asked to take part in their fabulous $99 sale fundraiser. Check it out on Sept.11-12th, and see if you can pick out my submission based on these paintings that I have done in the past!

Designers UNITE

Now more than ever I have been feeling how important it is to stay in touch, collaborate and depend on the people around me to encourage a positive outlook, and encouraging words. As of one minute ago I have decided that I'm the newest Freelance Graphic Designer (Yes, for hire!) in the Twin Cities. (Bring on the 2 hour Martini lunch meetings). I can proudly announce this because of the uber supportive people around me and their endless encouraging words. Thank You friends! I'm inspired by a blogger friend in particular– who just happens to be a designer as well, of the interior variety. My first post is her new marketing materials! It's always fun to design for friends, and this was no exception. The design was conceptualized over some giant burritos and a bag of chips so big I could use it as a raincoat. The logo is clean, simple and stylized–creating a look that will complement Brooke's timeless design style and carry over from print to web. Check out her website too. It's my first working site.
